{Red}

Red is a funny one for me. I grew up loving it (a whole wall in my bedroom was dedicated to it) but in recent years it has fallen out of favour with my interior tastes. I'm not too sure why, but what I do know is that it pops up quite regularly in decor schemes and for some is a must have colour in their homes. If introduced as a surprise pop then I do find myself liking red, but I'm still finding it hard to rekindle the fondness I held for it as a child. Still, I wouldn't say no to the sophisticated yet laid back living room (1) and the two dining rooms (2, 6) are certainly schemes that call out to me. Do you like decorating with red?

  1. Funnily enough, I'm just working out a moodboard for my hallway and I plan on accenting it with red. Not too much. Just hints here and there. It'll be a first for me and it'll start with the Flock print in Red by Wayne Pate - http://www.goodshapedesign.com/shop_work.html

  2. I am not liking that red bed set in #3 - it just reminds me of all those tacky England flags about because of the world cup!

I have painted my key-box and shoe-rack red in my hallway, as the hall itself is all white with a black-and-white chequerboard floor, so red seemed like the natural choice. I would take photos but the shoe rack is not attached to the wall yet!

  3. I have red in our master. I'm struggling a bit to making in work. I've thought recently about adding in some other colors like you said. I feel that would make it more bohemian like i like.

  4. I don't use red. But you're swaying me by showing me red done right. Wishes for a lovely day Will! xx

  5. Red is tricky. I've used it before in very contemporary applications,(mostly by request of the client) but always as just an accent. Like a red bench in a hotel lobby, or a pendant lamp with a red glass shade. But overall, personally I don't find it to be a very soothing color at the moment. But like with all things, it will no doubt definately come back in vogue...you just have to wait a few years.

  6. Hi Will!!!
So sorry I've been away... I've missed you! I'm a little shy with the color red. I find it a little hard to work with although I do have a touch of coral red in my home in a few spots. I love all the images you found though.

  7. I think red is a great anchor colour and if used in moderation can be just what a room needs. It's funny, I don't deliberately design with red, but it always seems to find it's way into a room. If you think of it as a neutral (really does go with everything) it's far less intimidating. Love the bedroom with the dark walls red-trimmed bedding :)

  8. Love it! It's my favorite color, but I know it can be overdone. Did you know that men see yellow-based reds more keenly than blue-based? It can really trick the eye, so if you don't love that particular shade, try something with a brown or black undertone to take out the bite.

  10. I too experimented with red in the past - during grad school painted my entire living room red - I don't think I would ever do that much again, but it made a statement that was for sure. A little pop here and there is probably more my style now. My favorite image you shared is 10 - just enough and it draws your eye to the lovely sink above. Have a beautiful week and thank so much for stopping by - it was my pleasure to include your post in my cups of tea. =)

  11. I have at least one read thing in almost every room in my house. It just gives it a little something-something.

  12. Love red but can´t seem to use it. Red and purple are difficult colors for me, it never fits in as I´d like it too. Maybe one day I´ll learn.

  13. Red has been used as an accent colour in my living room, love it! Wouldn't paint a whole wall red though! x

  14. Will, I am with you. I can only take red in small doses (or for X-mas!) but that last image is stunning.

Rust and orange are accent colors that work well for me .. and lately yellow...

    Happy new week to you!

  15. I know exactly how you feel about red! I for some reason even kind of forget about it. However when I see it used the right way, I love it! These dining chairs are so perfect. Hope you had a great weekend!

  18. I always go back and forth about red. Sometimes, I think it's a must and other times, I hate it. Right now, I'm loving it. :)

  20. Yes! I love red and after living in England, I loved red and yellow together and used this combo in my 2 houses...I just recently changed it out...I love the warm pops and if using just the right amount, it will look great!

  21. i just got rid of the last red in my house... painted a red foyer chest dark teal. i'm not loving red right now... but some of these choices might make me reconsider.

  22. Sometimes I've seen a decorating "rule" that every room needs a punch of red. It's just not me, though. In fact, I recently blogged that I'm not a fan of the ROY part of ROY G. BIV. Cool it, I say.

  23. I've been so drawn to red lately.
Which is nuts, cuz it has never been a favourite. But, lately, I dunno. It's calling out to me!

  24. Argh, the white chair in the first picture is up for auction on ebay. It's not white though. It has an incredible profile. Seller won't ship, otherwise I would have bought it already!Pretty nice to see it in the picture.

Red is nice as a punch in white kitchens and bathrooms. Not too much of a fan of it in bedrooms or living rooms.

  26. I do love all of these rooms with pops of red colour in them, but I can't say I would ever decorate with red in my place. Maybe it's that red has too many connotations of red hot anger assocaited with it?

  27. same Will,
my home used to be swathed in it - then I couldn't look at it straight in the face without feeling ill! But I have turned a corner, as on the weekend, an old kelim rug (filled with tones of red) has made its way from my old shed back into my house. It's too early to say if it's just on holiday or not - but the times are a changing!

  28. i'm with you..not a fan of red in design. I had a red painting once a few years back but eventually it was moved into storage. i def see where you are coming from and following you. :)
