Three Ways: Rustic Kitchens

1; James Merrell | 2; Reed Davis | 3; Claudia Dulak
Alongside colourful interiors, those with a rustic, weathered and well-loved vibe are some of all time favourites. Whether it's a weathered farmhouse table or the cold, smooth surface of a stainless steel stool, there are various ways of creating a rustic feel to a kitchen. The first space - the kitchen of TV presenter Ben Fogle and his wife - illustrates how a combination of exposed brick walls and vintage finds can create a rustic vibe. No brick walls in your crib? No fear, as the second kitchen is a great example of how to add a subtle rustic feel to a space, as opposed to it being the overriding theme to the room. This is achieved by styling the modern cabinetry with rattan textures, found items and rustic-cum-industrial furniture pieces, such as the the Tolix stool. Finally, if you're looking to redo your kitchen from scratch then using worn, wooden storage and cabinets is a good option. Once complete, be sure to pile high with a mix of tactile, wooden accessories. Which kitchen would you choose?

  1. They're all appealing for different reasons. The exposed brick wall reminds me of our apartment in Manhattan so I would have thought that would be the natural choice for me. But then I scrolled down to the third one and it's just so charming! As usual, I can't decide. :) xo

  2. The wood elements are so lovely - so is the exposed brick, which I love in any room.

  3. Definitely the last one for sure. I adore the almost French feel this space has with the beautiful worn wood; plus the open shelving and the wooden bench tops are divine xx

  7. The rustic kitchen style with many wooden elements is my cup of tea!
It looks so homely and comfortable.
I'm lucky to have a talented wood turner for a husband so there would be no shortage of beautiful and practical hand turned bowls and platters.

  14. I must say I love the brightness of the second kitchen style, the wethered wood of the third and the awesome cabinet and clock of the first style! I gotta go scavenge some flee markets.....soon!

  15. Living in a converted timber loft, our kitchen most resembles #1 but #2 -- white, bright and light -- that's a dream.

  16. Number one is really cool, but I think I would choose number three. It looks so cosy and homy. I would like to cook there with my friends, using the beautiful bottles of oil and vinegar, mixing a nice salad in one of those wooden bowls.

  17. Anything with brick walls! I already know that in my next "dream home" I will have a bistro feel kitchen with brick walls and a LONG rustic farm table. (I will even skip the formal dining room).

Warm hugs to you Mr. Bright.

  20. @CB - I like all the natural light in the second kitchen, too. Happy flea time!

@Amanda - Number two is lovely but if your kitchen is like number one then that's pretty amazing as well! ;)

@Jamie - I love how you've imagined what you would do in the space if it was yours... I totally do that as well!

@Hilla, Samantha - Thanks for stopping by! Number three is full of lovely textures.

@red.neck chic, Yoke - Number one is proving popular, folks!

  22. Exposed brick is great if the bricks are a good colour. When we moved into our house they looked hideous and overwhelming in a very small room and I admit I had them painted white before the removal men had finished unloading!! GG

  23. Will - you stopped by my blog and left a comment!!!! AHHH!!! i read your blog everyday thanks for stopping by such a newbie place...i think you're my new favorite ;)

  24. I like them all, very good post. I bought a house that I'm moving into in a couple months. There was an addition done behind the kitchen and there is a hidden brick wall between the two rooms. I have to investigate how much it would cost to expose it because it probably means removing the cupboards too...

  25. I would go for subtle style but with that gorgeous exposed brick work! Stunning! xo

  26. Each one is beautiful in their own way, it's hard to pick a favorite! Love these!

  27. That was an interesting exercise to choose between those three. Although I liked all of them the third one is the one I'd like to live with.

  28. @lisa, Jessie - It's OK, you can love them all! ;)

@GG - Good point. Some exposed bricks can be a bit of an eye sore!

@everything bananas - Thanks for stopping by!

@louly - Sounds exciting! I hope the investigating doesn't prove it to be too expensive because those bricks sound like they would be lovely in your new space.

    @Rachie - Great choice, hun!

@Starybluesky - Number three has a very calming feel to it.
