Colour Palette: A Black & White Bathroom

I'm a huge advocate for using black when decorating because I think of it as a seductive, intriguing and all together more interesting 'neutral' than it's softer counterparts. Why do I refer to it as a neutral? Because it's an ideal background 'canvas' hue for layering in other hues into your scheme. You can see how I layered in yellow and tangerine colours to a black canvas in my old bedroom. Back to this bathroom and we can see how the use of black upon the walls adds drama, yet maintains a fresh feel thanks to its pairing with a gloss white subway tile. When I painted with black in my bedroom, I didn't find it cold, in fact it was cosy and enveloping if anything. However, this bathroom is a very different space, with lots of reflective, cool white surfaces which paired with the black could feel quite cool. You can easily warm up this paring with a few accent hues: introduce zesty greenery and uplifting yellow and Geranium pink in the form of tactile textiles. This bathroom is a real winner in Mr. B's book, but what do you like about it?

  1. I really love the black painted walls in this bathroom. Black is such a hard paint color but in this space it works.

  2. Yes! I love adding a bit of black - even if you love white, black makes white look whiter and the contrast is more stunning, so it's perfect. Have a good weekend Will!

  4. I'm such a fan of using black - it really adds an element of sophistication to a space... and here it works perfectly to give a little drama to the upper walls. The addition of the greenery and the pink lightens up the space and makes it feel more youthful!

  5. Black and white is such a sleek and stylish combo. However, I like that there is a pop of color added by the little rug.

  7. I love the classic style of this bathroom, but I guess I never had choosen black for the walls, but as I can see is works very well, because the light in this room is really fabulous. The fresh colors of the accessoires given the room a preppy atmophere.

  13. Ooohh, I love this bathroom! I'm a big fan of those darker/modern 'neutrals' in interiors too and am currently using a navy blue paint in our bathroom. I'd love to have the white subway tiles too but for now, I'm making do with the larger white ones we already have. You've inspired me to get back in there and finish the job with this post!
