{Exposed Brick Walls}

I love me a good loft. Remember this? Yeah, I'm still dreaming of it on average 3 hours per day. So, I thought I'd try and get my loft-like, exposed brick walls crush outta my system with a nice round up of them working their rustic charm. First up, there's this amazing loft entrance (1) where the deliciously masculine garage-style doors are framed by battered bricks. Onto bedroom spaces (2, 4) where I think the look kinda works, but not as well as it does in open plan living/dining areas. If I had to pick my favourites, I'd clearly go for that entryway, and if I was being greedy I might have to bag the home office (6) and the kitchen (11) looks, too! That kitchen shot, by the way, is from the Clinton Street Bakery in NYC - isn't it a treat? It's on my places to visit next time I'm in town, and not just for the decor - The New York Times Magazine voted their blueberry pancakes the best in the city...twice! So, do you like exposed brick walls? And do you have a favourite way to decorate with them?

  1. Hello and thank you for your lovely comment on my art blog. x

    Yes, these warehouse style lofts are enough to make us all weak at the knees. That double door in no 1 is gorgeous!
    A fab parade of pictures all round really, and I especially love those where the rough, edgy rawness is balanced with a touch of chic, elegance and glam. Dream worthy for sure.

  4. Great selection. I love the play of light from the red standard lamp in the lounge scheme.
    There's an honesty about exposed brick walls. I think they have their place in a design scheme but I wouldn't choose to include brick walls as a means of decoration unless it was a new build (fabulous clean smart bricks) or a renovation project (full of character and charm). Does anyone have any good ideas for sealing the bricks so they don't create dust?

  8. I've always loved exposed brick - we used to own an 1850 stone home and the kitchen walls were all exposed limestone. It was by far my favourite home ever. : )

  9. I have been obsessed with exposed brick walls for a while now, but, alas, have never lived in a place with them. A friend of mine, though, just installed "faux" exposed brick - they are actual bricks that were sliced in half and put on the wall. It looks amazing!

  13. Am in love. Absolutely in love with all the imagery here... Have ALWAYS wanted to live in a loft, guess it's the artist in me who dreams of arched windows, brick and creaky floorboards.

    So thank you for bringing the dream into a post, so perfect.

  17. Fab selection of images, Will! I love the urban-meets-industrial look of exposed brick, it's such a treat to see so many in one place!

    Brick takes away a lot of light so if I ever had the good fortune of decorating a place with exposed brick, I'd be using a lot of white - like in this - http://www.styleathome.com/homes/small-spaces/small-space-interior-bachelorette-pad/a/30258

  20. Wow. These are gorgeous. Don't think I've ever seen these images myself before. Funny, my last job was in an old protected building in Old Montreal where the old brick walls as well as the old wood beams (as our offices were being renovated) had to be protected. It was beautiful to look at, not so great when the bugs would actually crawl out from between the bricks and land on our desks. haha!

  21. I love exposed bricks (and those lovely pics you posted)! I have them on my fireplace...but think about painting them almost every month. I haven't yet, bc that's one thing that would pretty hard to reverse!

  26. oh my god that kitchen is BEAUTIFUL, that is exactly how i would want mine to look. it's just so not typical. I love exposed brick, it adds such character to the room. my favorite part about it is how it clashes with things, it makes the space look so much more interesting. great blog by the way :)

  27. I'm totally having an exposed brick moment too! I never liked it before, but some of the more recent takes (like the one's in this post) are so much more refined than the 90s versions.

    Picture # 3...my dream kitchen.

  31. I know what you mean about daydreaming of your very own exposed brick walls. Some days I come home and just want to takea sledgehammer to the chimney flue in my living room to get rid of all the plaster! (And yes, I'm well aware of how scary I sound...)
