Woonwinkel Homewares

I recently discovered Woonwinkel, literally translated as 'home shop' in Dutch, a Portland, Oregon based shop that focuses on well made, handcrafted furnishings for the home. The brand describes themselves as a departure from the hard, slick modern aesthetic of the past, instead calling themselves the 'new modern': warm, inviting, tactile, quirky. Modern with soul. Woonwinkel showcases independent designers from Europe and North America with a particular affection for makers on the U.S. west coast. Their vessels collection is what caught my eye the most, and it perfectly matches the description of the brand: quirky shapes are teamed with uplifting hues. The Tripot is my favourite piece, but which is yours?

Scion: Colour & Pattern Ideas

New British brand, Scion, recently released it's first collection of prints, weaves and wallcoverings. The Melinki collection is a taste of things to come from the brand which is aimed at a trend-savvy, fashion-aware customer in mind. The fabrics and wall coverings here are vibrant, fresh and accessible. Comprising a mix of printed fabrics, embroideries, jacquards, co-ordinating plains and complementary wallcoverings, Melinki draws inspiration from both mid-century archive documents and modern Scandinavian design. Uncomplicated yet powerfully effective, the collection channels fashion motifs and colours. It bestows the freedom to create a diverse range of moods and looks through its mix of designs and cool, clean, colour groups, which include coastal calm, retro kitsch, bakelite brights and urban neutrals. Scion truly is a great British brand: all Melinki’s printed fabrics and wallcoverings are manufactured in the UK, by factories that have clear commitments and initiatives towards the care of the environment and to sustainability. Plus, the collection is available internationally - just what us online folks like to hear! What's catching your eye, folks?

A Colourful Swedish Fabric Collection

Vanessa Arbuthnott's Swedish collection draws inspiration from some of the iconic British designers of the 1950's - but with a subtle Scandinavian twist. The four new designs depict stylised birds and foliage in new Gustavian shades such as Dove and Dusky Pink and some bright contemporary colours, Pumpkin and Sweet Pea with a spot and a striped design as co-ordinates. The Pretty Maids fabric in Duck Egg, Pumpkin and Winter colourway is hands down my favourite, but Stockholm Stripe in Sweet Pea and Winter is a close second. Congratulations to Vanessa on her 10th fabric collection: one full of wonderful colour and pattern. A big thumbs up from Mr. Bazaar!

Colour Palette: Barcelona Tabletop

How do you fancy joining Mr. Bazaar for a little Mediterranean mezze today? After seeing this tabletop of pieces from John Lewis, I'm feeling inspired to pull together a relaxed lunch with friends, serving up light bites upon glazed terracotta ceramics in deep purples and zesty hues. Stripe linens nod to the colours seen in the serveware, whilst acacia wood serving boards adds texture to the affair. These are my favourite types of lunches: lingering, relaxed and packed with flavour and colour. What constitutes an ideal summer lunch and tabletop for you, folks?

Colour Palette: Kitchen Colour Block

Sometimes with colour it's best not to over think things. Instead, just pick a few of your favourite hues and  dive on into your colour journey. Despite its bright hues this kitchen maintains an air of simplicity because the colour is applied in a colour block style. Two shades of orange are teamed with a matt pink (those two are like best buds!) and the fresh yellow breaks the flow, stopping the scheme from feeling too forced. I love this stylish yet bold use of colour. Isn't it wonderful how much personality and pizazz colour can add to a space?!

Happy Weekend: Breakfast Nook Colour

OK, let's chat ideal weekends, shall we? Of course, I like to start my day in colourful surroundings, so this breakfast nook would be ideal. A combination of zesty yellow, green and orange accent hues against a refreshing white base palette equals a winning space, ideal for a leisurely breakfast. I'd enjoy a bowl of fresh fruit whilst browsing the weekend papers, before popping to the farmer's market to pick up supplies for that evening's dinner. I'd return home to cook up a new dish before relaxing with a great friends and a good movie. What do you do to relax on the weekend, friends? Have a good one!

I'd Like To Be...

Ever since I was a kid I've been fascinated with the red buses in London. Perhaps it was the fun of being able to 'hop on, hop off' from either the front or back of the bus as it pulled into a stop. Or it could of been the excitement of travelling to see a new part of the capital city. Either way, I couldn't not choose the red bus driver print from I'd Like To Be, especially as the driver seems to love bow ties as much as Mr. Bazaar! This creative series of prints is designed by Jamie Nash, a London-based designer who hand silkscreens every print. So, tell me, which print is for you, friends?

Three Ways: Colourful breakfast nooks

I love breakfast nooks. Fact. There is something cosy and welcoming about them that I always relate to. For me, breakfast is a time to gather one's thoughts for the day ahead and enjoy a moment of calm before the day kicks off. In my little London flat I sit at my dining table to eat each morning but one day I'd love to have the space to create a dedicated area as seen in these three spaces. The first, Circus Brights, is ideal for colour-loving families as it sees cheerful hues paired with weathered wooden surfaces resulting in a stylish, grown up take on a multi-coloured scheme. I love the Scandi feel to this nook, achieved with the tongue and groove panelling and white washed floors and walls. The second space, Citrus Zing, shows how modernistas can add fresh, bold accent hues to even the most stark of spaces. And finally, Lazy Lemon (by far my favourite name of all three!) is perfect when you have a feature you don't want to overshadow. Here, the breathtaking view from the picture windows is framed by a sophisticated palette of cool grey and muted lemon - a real winner in my book! Which of the three do you like best?

How to mix, match & clash colour!

Shop the market picks: 1. Yellow lasagne dish, $52 | 2. Purple and green salad plate, $16.99 | 3. Ikat bowl, $0.99  | 4. Ooti fabric | 5. Yellow fruit jug, £30 | 6. Ditte sofa, £2698

As soon as I saw this colour clash story in Red magazine, I knew instantly that I had to share it here on Bright.Bazaar because it's a fine example of how to decorate with mix and match colours and patterns. Ironically, even though clashing prints and hues in this manner is essentially about breaking the rules, there are still guidelines you can follow to help keep the scheme looking stylish. Be sure to keep the bulk of your products (whether that's your tableware or your soft furnishings) all within the same palette. Different shades and hues, yes, but all the same colour family. Then, to add your clash twist to the scheme, throw in a decorating curveball with a contrast colour. This can be seen above with where purple is combined with a contrasting orange or green. The look has a tropical, summertime feel to it, so I rounded up some great buys to emulate the look. Which piece would you buy?

Cheers! Friday has arrived and it's time to order the cocktail of the moment. Like Russell and Katy this is well and truly a case of opposites attract. But this colour love affair isn't destined for doom. No siree! This is a marriage is set to last; the sassy, sleek and sexy black hues are counter balanced the by the bold, brash and bright tangerine notes. How do these two hues go the distance? They mix in a little lemon every now and then to keep the zest alive! Order The Tangerine Dream for your Scandi kitchen/dinner next time you decorate and you're scheme will last to the finish line and beyond. Happy Friday, folks!

Quick & Easy Weekend Decorating Idea

Martha Stewart Living | Photography by Jonny Valiant
Call me weird but my weekend doesn't really feel complete unless I have a little project on the go. It doesn't have to anything big, I just like to feel I am making progress with something, especially if it means making my home all the more enjoyable to be in. This idea from Martha Stewart Living to paint the edge of a door is the perfect weekend project: it's quick, easy and provides a dramatic effect when finished. Also, this is an ideal project if you want to dip your toes into brighter hues for the first time. What are your favourite weekend DIY's? I'd love to discover some more!

Burnt Orange & Neon Pink Colour Scheme

Red | Styling Mary Norden | Photography Polly Wreford
You may remember this colour story I blogged about a few months back? Well I happened upon some more images from the shoot and the saturated hues caught my colour-loving eye once again. The combination of burnt orange and neon pink is one of those combinations that works a treat. For best results keep the second colour (either the orange or the pink) to a minimum, almost using it as an accent in a scheme dominated by the opposite colour. Here the neon pink's bright and glossy finish works well by breaking up the earthy, weathered orange shades around it. Ah, colour, I do love it!

Colour Palette: Turquoise, Yellow & Orange

BHG
Summer feels like it's slipping away fast here today (it's due to hot a bit over the weekend, though - fingers crossed!) so I wanted to share this delightful sunroom from Better Homes & Gardens. This is a great example of how to work with three strong hues in the same space: turquoise, yellow and orange are all powerful colours but used carefully they can work together. Here we see how orange is primarily used in rugs, which serves to ground the scheme, whilst the light turquoise colour block ceiling lifts the space, drawing the eye upwards and adding visual interest. Meanwhile, the graphic yellow stripes, buttercup-coloured blooms and patterned textiles all serve to break up the blocks of the two hues. The perfect retreat after a long afternoon of tennis!

Red Magazine: The Colour Issue

The moment I read the orange colour story in the interiors section of Red's March issue I knew I wanted to share it here on Bright.Bazaar. Exotic, uplifting and unforgivingly bright, the editorial - styled by Mary Norden and shot by Polly Wreford - is an inspiring guide on how to use orange in your home. From textiles to paints there's plenty to ignite your mind when it comes to this fiery hue. Plus, how cool is that doll's house? That's what I call knockout styling! As well as the feature, I've put together some market picks in case you feel like a spot of shopping. Well, it's mid week so we could all do with a little treat...!

Happy Weekend

This has been a favourite snap of mine for some time; the punchy orange hues serve to break up the deep brown and taupe tones of the walls, whilst natural light floods in through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Yeah, I think a Mr.Bazaar would be right at home in this living room! It would be a fantastic party space, don't you think? Thank you for all your kind words and support this week, friends, I hope you all have wonderful weekend!

Home Tour: Delicious Darks Inside Location 78

Graham Atkins-Hughes is the talented photographer behind designer Abigail Ahern's book A Girls Guide to Decorating, and for those who have read the book you will be able to appreciate his ability to capture the personality of a space perfectly through his lens. Graham and Jo have recently decorated their East London townhouse in a glorious array of inky hues, with added punchy burnt orange accents to anchor the velvety dark shades. It's refreshing to see a home embracing dark colours across walls, floors and doors in the way the Atkins-Hughes have in their home. The mix of vintage vases, striking art works and the Racing Green armchair allows their living room to ooze class and sophistication, which continues in their bedroom with floor-to-ceiling teal cabinets. Quite simply: delicious. Whats more, if you are looking for a location to shoot in then stop looking because their home is available to hire for editorial and advertising shoots. Pop over to their website for all the details.
